Tree Advice for Homeowners

Although, it’s not politically correct, I have to admit that I am not a big tree lover.  We have our trees trimmed every other year and it's that time again.  We have squirrel's or rat's nests in two of our larger tree which shade our patio, but their pooh gets all over (yuck!)   While some of our more mature trees add shade to our yard our pool only gets sun around noon time.  And my tomato harvest was definitely hampered by these overgrown trees.

When we moved into our home, the former owner had trees dotting the entire yard.  Most were overgrown and unfortunately many were in the way.  When planting trees have a plan; don’t plant them in the middle of the yard, plant them nearer the fence.  You will want room for playing in the yard or perhaps a patio or swing set.   If they are shade trees plant where you desire shade.

Upon settling into our home we planted lemon and lime trees.  The five gallon plants are currently about $35 and produce fruit in a year or two.  Although, I have a daughter who loves avocadoes, I put off planting one fearing it would only attract more rodents.  But last year, I stuck a pit in the ground and I now have an avocado tree growing, perhaps it will produce next year.

Two years ago, we added an apple tree and I just picked our first harvest.  If you have automatic sprinklers and a good gardener to prune the fruit trees aren’t much work.

For those of you fortunate enough to have recently purchased a home, congratulations!   Like most new owners you likely have your eye on numerous improvements and changes.  Of course initially it is a struggle as to where you first spend your remodeling dollars.  But I suggest that you set aside about a $100 and plant three, 5 gallon trees.  Which are your favorites? Lemons, limes, oranges, avocados?    Fall is tree planting time… so no excuses, the time is near!

There is something so fulfilling about picking fresh fruit and vegetables from your yard.  And if you know someone who recently moved into a new home, why not buy them their first tree (or give a gift certificate); I think it is a thoughtful gift.
