So what does a Realtor do when only a few people come to their open house?

For a variety of reasons I am a fan of the two hour open house.   This tight timeline keeps a steady stream of traffic.  With constant activity comes extra security for the homeowner, I feel it’s less likely for someone to have the opportunity to steal when a lot of people are coming in and out.  Also, I feel safer when there are lots of people.

There are many instances where Lisa, Natalie or I will hold our listings open with at least two of us.  This way we can keep a more watchful eye.  In addition, every now and again a Realtor will be killed at an open house.

So what does a real estate agent do when hardly anyone comes to their open house?  I think it is very unprofessional to catch an agent watching television.  Sometimes I will bring a professional magazine or a book.  I can always make telephone calls.  And due to the advent of smart phones, real estate agents can also check and respond to email.

It has not happened in years but recently I had a very quiet open house.  August is typically a quiet month as people sneak in last minute vacations and make back to school preparations.  This particular home is secluded and although the open house was well advertised and lots of signs were placed, there were gaps of time when no one came.  After Lisa and I made our phone calls, replied to emails, we became bored.  We work together all week and chit chat became old as well.

Lisa uploaded words with friends on my iPhone and we played scrabble.  If you haven’t played, try it, it's lots of fun.
