How long does it take to make or break a habit?

I have heard that you can break or make a habit in three weeks. I believe you can make a bad habit sooner than three weeks, I know if I get in a pattern of eating ice cream every day, it won’t take three weeks for it to be my newest bad habit.

Three weeks to break a bad habit or create a good one works for me.  After I quit smoking several years ago, I made the habit to walk the dogs each day.  After three weeks the habit was solidified and it worked for me.  I added another healthy routine with Pilates (I attend three times a week) another positive habit.

A real estate agent’s schedule can be chaotic and for me cooking routines are habits (or ruts) as well. Once I get out of the cooking pattern it is hard for me to get back in the grind.  I find myself ordering take out, making sandwiches for dinner, etc.  When I am in my positive cooking mode, I am making good use of quieter days to prepare healthy meals which yield a lot of leftovers.

What’s my next positive habit?  I am not sure; maybe it will have to do with decluttering.  Maybe I will pencil in my calendar one day a month to clean a closet.
