SB 183, what is a CO detector?

According to Wikipedia a carbon monoxide detector or CO detector is a device that detects the presence of the carbon monoxide (CO) gas in order to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. CO is a colorless and odorless compound produced by incomplete combustion.

SB 183 requires the installation of a carbon monoxide (CO) detector in existing single-family homes by July 1, 2011, and other existing residential units by January 1, 2013.  If you are selling your home the CO detector will be what is considered a point of sale requirement, just like mandatory smoke detectors and proper water heater strapping.

I contacted my favorite full service hardware store, Virgil’s in Glendale and was told they are about $30 - $60.
