LA Weekly - A Los Angeles Adventure

Living in Southern California presents so many opportunities for unique adventures and quick weekend getaways.  Having daughters in two different colleges, offers me the incentive to explore cities I had not discovered until it was college time.  Our eldest returned from her semester in Florence and is again studying at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.  Last weekend George & I drove to San Luis Obispo to visit her.

As with many college towns the majority of the hotels are of the motel variety.  I think the best place to stay is Petit Soleil a charming Bed and Breakfast, within walking distance to restaurants and only about a mile from the campus and student housing.  The bed is comfy and the room is charming and immaculately clean.  Unless you opt to pay more for a larger room, the room and bathroom are on the small size BUT there is no reason to hole up in the room.  Included in the room price is coffee, tea, juice and breakfast in the morning (remember Bob Newhart’s Inn?) and an assortment of newspapers and free wifi.  In the evening, guests are offered complementary central coast wines and appetizers.  Coffee and tea is available most of the day.  The staff is friendly and the service is superb.

My brother and his wife are Cal Poly alumni and they met us there for the weekend. On Sunday we went wine tasting in Paso Robles, the wineries are unpretentious and the wine is great; we purchased our favorites and had a lovely lunch at Artisan.

Monday morning we checked our email, had coffee, read the paper and had a delicious breakfast at Petit Soleil before returning home around noon.  It was wonderful catching up with my brother and sister-in-law and of course Krissy.
