What’s your walk score?
One of the things I most enjoyed during last fall’s trip to Europe was the fact that we walked and walked and walked. It was wonderful! Europeans have tiny cars and use them less frequently. Their kitchens are smaller so they market more frequently; no big box stores. They pick up fresh produce or bread on the way home.
Walkable neighborhoods offer benefits to the environment, our health, our finances, and our communities.
Health: The average resident of a walkable neighborhood weighs 7 pounds less than someone who lives in a sprawling neighborhood.
Finances: One point of Walk Score is worth up to $3,000 of value for your property.
Communities: Studies show that for every 10 minutes a person spends in a daily car commute, time spent in community activities falls by 10%.
A Walk Score measures the number of typical consumer destinations within walking distance of a house, with scores ranging from 0 (car dependent) to 100 (most walkable). By the Walk Score measure, walkability is a direct function of how many destinations are located within a short distance (generally between one-quarter mile and one mile of a home). The measure of walkability reflects the convenience and proximity of having shopping and cultural activities nearby.

The average walk score in La Canada is only 43. But my new listing at 4424 Bel Aire Ave, boasts a walk score of 78, and is a five minute walk to the new Town Center, restaurants, shopping and the soon to be opened Henry’s Market.
