Realtor’s Closet Organization
So how did I do on organizing my closet?
The good:
I put together three bags of high end, clothing, shoes and handbags for the battered women at the Glendale YWCA. If you have high end apparel and are reluctant to part with it, this is a great group to give to. They also welcome other items for their thrift shop, but I have never had a problem giving tee shirts and sweats away, it is the nice stuff that is hard to part with.
I gave my cleaning lady another four bags of apparel.
The dust bunnies are gone.
I found all of George’s lost hats. He seldom wears flip flops and sandals, so I was able to organize those in a basket which I placed on the shelf. (He went to New York, and I can’t begin to figure out what fits;
George’s clothes are all on top of the guest bed… waiting for him)

After eliminating 30% of my stuff, I found an entire wardrobe that I couldn’t previously access.
It may seem ridiculous but I feel a wonderful sense of accomplishment.
The bad:
After the handyman sanded down the cedar, the cleaning lady cleaned the closet. Then she and I sorted, made sure everything was on the plastic hangers which I prefer. But it took all day and part of the next. My words of wisdom: don’t wait 17 years to empty your closet.
I still haven’t removed items which don’t fit; I still have things in my closet that shouldn’t be there. But there is not an ugly, so overall: Mission Accomplished.

My wife and I need to go through our closets. Our closet is packed full of stuff we don't even use. We have clothes in there that we haven't worn for a couple months and some wedding gifts still in the gift bags. Looks like we have a new weekend project!

It is true that certain people wait years before they clear their closet which can make them suffer when they realize they need to clean it up and get rid of items that are of no use anymore. At least once in people's lives, they experience organizing their closet which can get them hooked to be neat sometimes. Good thing you're done with yours!

Almost two decades of not cleaning the closet can definitely bring about this situation. However, it is admirable that you were able to sort and arrange most things. Letting go of items that are not needed can be a challenge but once you did, you can have a sigh of relief. Congratulations!
