What is a coffered ceiling?

When visiting my eldest daughter in Florence, my mother and I stayed at the Hotel Helvetia and Bristol.   The hotel was ideally sited just several blocks from her apartment which is near the Piazza de Republica where her school is located.
 

In the afternoon, my mom and I would wait in our beautiful lobby for her to finish her class.  The lobby had an exquisite
coffered ceiling
According to Wikipedia:  A coffer (or coffering) in architecture, is a sunken panel in the shape of a square, rectangle, or octagon in a ceiling, soffit or vault.
