Memorial Day Weekend Getaways

I will be in town over Memorial Day, but for those of you looking to get away, Lisa and I put together a few of our favorite getaways:

Las Vegas
The weather is great, the pools are packed, and the parties are endless. Expect long lines at the airport, pools, clubs, and everywhere else this weekend. Flights and hotel room rates are typically higher on holidays.
Lisa’s recommendations: The Venetian because it’s next to everything. She loves dining at Tao restaurant before going to the nightclub at Tao. If you order 2 entrees at the restaurant there is free admission into the club.
Phyllis’s recommendations: Caesar’s Palace, close to shopping and I love the “waters ” (think ancient Roman baths).

Los Angeles/ West Hollywood
Chateau Marmont  If you are looking to stay in town, a weekend at the Chateau can be wildly fun and exciting. The hotel and outdoor restaurant are pet friendly, if you have a dog take him/her along, or bring your swimsuit and lounge by the pool.

Palm Springs/Palm Desert
Enjoy a weekend in the sun with your family and friends. There are some great golf courses and excellent outlet shopping.
Lisa’s recommendations: La Quinta Resort, favorite restaurant is Las Casuelas. They have great Mexican food and excellent Margaritas.
Phyllis’s recommendations:  I have only been to Palm Springs a couple of times since putting in our pool.  But years ago, I stayed at the Ingleside Inn which was very quiet and I loved it.  I have also stayed at the Spa which is ideal if you are going to the casino,

San Diego
If you take Amtrak, it's a little less than three hours and approximately $30 per adult round trip.  If you are unafraid of crossing the border to Mexico you could also make a day of it and go down to Tijuana.
Great for kids: San Diego Zoo, Sea World, The Wild Animal Park, Legoland, Old Town San Diego, San Diego Mission.
Lisa’s recommendations: Stay in the Gas Lamp District which is close to Downtown San Diego nightlife, or stay in La Jolla.
Phyllis recommendations: Hotel Del Coronado, it’s not convenient but I love this historic hotel and it’s beach setting.

San Francisco
If you fly, it's wiser  to fly into Oakland (no fog and not as many flight delays). Amtrak takes too long.
Lots of sight seeing such as Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, China Town, Fisherman’s Wharf, Ghirardelli Square, Lombard Street and of course riding the trolley.                                                                                                                                                                                               Lisa’s recommendations: I like staying at the W downtown because it’s close to Union Square stores and great restaurants. For brunch you must go to Mama's on Washington.
Phyllis’s recommendations:  Dim Sum in China Town, Fisherman’s Wharf and a must see is Alcatraz.

San Luis Obispo
Wine tasting, beaches, a beautiful city.  George and I have a daughter in college here and have grown very fond of SLO.
Phyllis’s recommendations: If you are there on Thursday, do not miss the Farmer’s Market Louisa’s Place for breakfast (crowded, get there early). Novo Restaurant overlooks the creek and is a lovely setting for lunch.  There is a Ralph Lauren Polo outlet in Pismo Beach.
Where to stay: George once stayed at the Petit Soleil bed and breakfast which is very charming.  I have stayed at the Inn at Avila Beach : affordable, beach front, a bit tired, but friendly service and a beautiful roof top deck (bring your own wine). I have also stayed at the Dolphin Bay Resort which too is beach front.  The resort is condo style with full kitchens.  I don’t know that the Dolphin Bay is rated yet, but it is a five star site.
