Mills Act – Potential Property Tax Savings

In a different economy many home owners didn’t want the “hassle” or limitations of having their home historically registered. But in today’s economy a penny saved is truly a penny earned.

The Mills Act encourages property owners of historic
and/or architecturally significant homes to maintain the architectural integrity of their properties for at least a ten year period.  A qualified historic or architecturally significant property needs to become officially registered.  Generally homes must meet at least one of seven criteria. Once registered, approved homeowners may realize property tax savings between 40-60%.

Some participating communities in my (neighbor) hood include: GlendalePasadena, South Pasadena, Sunland, Tujunga, La Crescenta, Silver Lake and Los Feliz.  Want more info including lists of participating cities and contact information? If you need assistance in researching the pedigree of your home contact a local building biographer.
