The Down Sizing of America

In 2007, I predicted that the next housing shift would be the downsizing of America: How large of a closet do you require when you are wearing the same several outfits?  Do you require ten – twenty pairs of shoes? I have a dear friend who tells me “less is more” and quite often it really is.  Maybe the days of gluttony are over and we will start to use what we need and leave the rest for someone else.

The National Association of Realtors also has a
blog; I thought this post along the same lines was of interest:  Have the days of the 4,000-square-foot McMansion come to an end?  Maybe, according to a recent article in The Los Angeles Times by Nicholas Riccardi (see Home Sizes Change With the Times) The size of the average America home shrunk by 11 percent last year, a faster rate than any time since the 1970s, according to the article.

In fact, the National Association of Home Builders is reporting that 90 percent of its builder members are opting to build small now due to increased energy consciousness, downsizing empty-nest baby boomers, and, not surprisingly, the softening economy......

I suppose if Candy Spelling can downsize from 56,000 square feet to a paltry 17,000 the rest of us can make similar adjustments.
