Holiday Shopping and the Los Angeles Economy
I received the Neiman Marcus Christmas catalog, and I am not certain if it is the economy or what, but I flipped threw it then tossed it in the trash. I don’t think their marketing execs have heard that excess is out of fashion for all but the wealthy (seriously wealthy, not the pretenders).
There is certainly no shortage of Los Angeles shopping venues, but this year, you won’t catch me at Glendale's Americana or Pasadena's Paseo for last minute Christmas shopping. Each year, I vow that I will not ruin my Christmas spirit due to last minute shopping and this will be the year! My goal is to be have all of the gifts except for my immediate family purchased, wrapped and ready by the end of November.
I was able to order one set of nephew's gifts online and by doing so on the Lufthansa mileage mall website, I extended my miles for another 18 months. The parents of the remaining nieces and nephews were “put on notice” for ideas or expect a check. It looks like the check it is for them. George’s gift is tucked away, and I have all ready started on my daughters.
One great gift idea: last year someone (I can’t remember who) sent a card stating that in the spirit of the holiday, donations in lieu of gifts were made. I thought this was wonderful and they listed an assortment of charities, who needs another Hickory Farms basket? Looking for a worthy charity? I highly recommend the Glendale YWCA, I am on the Board and I can assure you that this is a worthwhile cause. Donate here: (a little Karma can go a long way).
Share your favorite inexpensive holiday gift suggestions. I can use them, the clock is ticking.
