Shake Roofs - Are they a Los Angeles fire hazard?
When showing homes to potential buyers, a Realtor addresses issues that a buyer may be unaware of. (New) shake roofs in Los Angeles were banned two decades ago. Prior to the ban, shake roofs were in high demand even with the known fire hazards. Many homeowners loved the look of the shake or appreciated the longevity.

When considering the purchase of a home with a shake roof, a buyer should be aware that the roof is older, and because of the fire hazard the home may be more difficult or costly to insure.

Oh my god.. My whole house is made of shakes... but not the roof. Now I know why my insurance is so high, but the insurance company never told me anything about that. I am a realtor, and wonder if I am obligated to mention that to a buyer if I sell sometime in the future.

Seems that you should, particularly if you are representing the buyer.
