Farmer's Market

When was the last time you visited Los Angeles's Farmer’s Market?

In July 1934 a contingent of farmers pulled their trucks onto an expanse of empty land at the property known as Gilmore Island at the corner of Third and Fairfax in Los Angeles. They displayed their produce on the tailgates of their vehicles, to their delight, customers quickly arrived and parked their cars on a hastily created dirt parking lot in spaces designated with chalk. They strolled among the trucks purchasing fruit, vegetables and flowers. The atmosphere was casual, the open air commerce enticing, the goods fresh, and the result remarkable. Farmers Market became an instant institution.

We had the pleasure of visiting Florence for Thanksgiving 2007 and one of my favorite memories is that of their grocery market.  It is similar to Los Angeles’s Farmer’s Market with the “indoor-outdoor” feel.  Both offer numerous vendors, ample variety and wonderful foods.

I found myself in West Hollywood last week and couldn’t pass up the detour to Farmer’s Market.  I purchased fresh fruit, fresh bread, and items from the butcher.  I even bought crabapples  (they look like cherries) – haven’t tasted them yet, but I had never seen them before and couldn’t resist.   There are also a variety of casual restaurants that looked great.

I have seen similar double decker buses in numerous cities over the years and now Los Angeles has our own Downtown Loop Tour. Prices max out at $30.00 for adults, the tour runs 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and pick ups are each ½ hour. Los Angeles is a tourist destination and we now have the bus to prove it! The information isn’t yet on the Starline website, but after several calls I was able to get “the scoop”.
