45,000 sq ft Sports Chalet now open in La Canada

As a real estate agent, I assumed that La Canada Flintridge was "on the map" because of their coveted public schools or perhaps their low crime rate.  Wrong!  Sports Chalet has put La Canada on the map - how this will impact the city, many have affectionately nicknamed Mayberry RFD remains to be seen.

On April 1,1959, a young man named Norbert Olberz heard about a little ski shop for sale. It was located in a town called La Cañada, just north of Los Angeles, California. Norbert and his new wife, Irene, plunked down all of their savings and set up shop. During the first year, Norbert and Irene slept in the back of the ski shop, taking showers at night with a garden hose through their back screen door.

The new  45,000 square-foot Sport Chalet in the La Cañada Town Center has opened.  Sports Chalet is the anchor for the  La Cañada Flintridge Town Center. There is even a swimming pool for scuba lessons. The $60-million project is over 11 acres and will be home to 15 stores and restaurants.  The new store and center are a dream come true for La Canada resident and Sports Chalet owner Norbert Olberz.
