Glendale Alex Theatre; Neo Classic Architecture

Growing up in Glendale, I often frequented the Alex Theatre to watch movies; this landmark (unfortunately) didn’t seem remarkable to me at the time.  It was designed by Arthur G. Lindley and Charles R. Selkirk, with neo-classic Greek and Egyptian architectural elements. Originally, the "Alexander" Theatre, which opened in 1925 as a vaudeville and movie house, the Alex hosted previews and movies until the 1980s, when it closed.

Presently the Alex is proud to boast five resident companies: Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles, Glendale Youth Orchestra, Alex Film Society, and Musical Theatre Guild.  View the Alex Theatre's Calendar

Looking to while away a Saturday morning?  The Alex offers free backstage tours sponsored by Friends of the Alex. A guide will provide insight into the history, restoration, architecture, sculpture and other art objects. For reservations, call 818-243-7700 x 216.
