Do you believe in Ghosts?
What do you think? Would you buy a home where someone passed away?
From last week’s Newspress-Leader Q & A column
My husband and I have been looking at homes and finally found one that we love and can afford. We made an offer and the seller informed us that a family member had died in the home. I insisted that we not move forward with the sale and my husband thinks I am crazy. What is your opinion?
Superstitious
Dear Superstitious,
I think once a home is of a certain age, it is highly probable that someone will have passed in the house. For myself, if it is from natural causes and not a violent death, I don’t think it would dissuade me from proceeding with a purchase. With so many passing from diseases such as cancer, I would prefer to think that someone passed in the comfort of their home, with loved ones near, than alone in a hospital. Perhaps, a former owner passing in the home is actually “good karma”, but you need to “see it” that way.
As far as resale, I think many home buyers share my views. But, it is not about my opinion, or resale, if you are uncomfortable now, do you think it will change if you move forward? A home is a place to welcome us at the end of the day, not something to cause anxiety.
If you found the perfect home would you cross it off your list if a former occupant had passed away in the home?

I feel that if someone has passed away in the house and it was not violent, but rather natural causes or illness than it is a Blessing.
The home was loved and I would rather pass away in my home than in a sterile hospital bed.

My first reaction was "hell no!" I wouldn't by a home where someone died. Then my sister reminded me both my mother and my grandmother died at home. Oops. Amityville Horror -the home version. Would be just like grandma to "haunt"...not. Now mom on the other hand...
You're right, it's very personal and one must really be ok with it.
