Batchelder Tile

Last night, George and I were invited to a small private exhibit of the
Smithsonian (A Tribute to California).  Unfortunately, having just returned from Florence and Rome, it was not as exciting for me as it should have been.

I did though learn something new and I love to learn anything new.  Many of Los Angeles’ character homes have decorative tiles surrounding the fireplaces; the most famous designer was Batchelder.  As a Realtor, I would love to be able to authenticate these tiles, so that I could advertise “Batchelder Tile”  rather than “Batchelder Like”.

Several curators were on hand and they showed me a simple way to authenticate. The reverse side of the tile is marked “Batchelder”. Unfortunately this side will most likely be grouted into the fireplace and hidden.   But I did enjoy learning that they are difficult to authenticate and that they are marked (but generally on the back).

Hi I have over 300 original batchelder tiles inside and on entry staircases.
How much value will this add to our listing price of our home?

I wish I could give you an amount - depends on the size of the home, the location of the home.  But it will certainly add value to anyone that has an appreciation of a fine character homes.
