How large of a home do you really need?
I am probably similar to many homeowners and "wish" my master bedroom was larger and offered more closet space. I have "gotten over" not having a formal dining room that could accommodate a holiday family dinner for twenty (it is so much simpler to entertain causally); it would also be great to have a larger family room. I wish all of the bedrooms offered more closet space, but I live in a 1940's home and have closet space that is typical for a home of that era.
Even if we could afford a 5000 square foot home in my neighborhood (now maybe 4000 square feet would be nice), I really have no desire for that large of a home and often wonder how large a family of four (like mine) "needs" their home to be.
Over the past three decades, prosperity and a demand for space to accommodate home theaters, offices, gyms and palatial kitchens has pushed up the average size of newly constructed single-family homes by nearly 45% even as the size of the average family has declined. Last year, according to the Census Bureau, the median size of a newly completed single-family home reached 2,248 square feet, up from 1,560 square feet in 1974.

Do you remember my post regarding How large of a home do you really need? I haven’t yet given a lot of thought as to what is hot and what is not for 2009, but I predict that McMansions are out for 2009. With the restructuring of our economy, new homes sizes are finally shrinking. And don’t forget Mayor Villaraigosa’s thought to (extra) tax those with homes over 5,000 sq ft. ...

How about the house you grew up in on Pacific with only just under 1400 sq. ft. ?
I wonder how we ever did it!

Exactly, and we even had a good sized family room, eat-in kitchen AND dining room, closet space was lacking... but it worked for well for a family of five.
Love you too
